I am 52 and was very much out of shape and overweight. I had done running before but when I re-started I could not run for more than 3 minutes.
I started with Dominique's running program and have now moved on to the 10k program. I have a few more weeks left and will go for the 1/2 marathon after that.
The great aspect about Dominique's programs is that with a heart rate monitor it is not the speed which counts but the level of intensity and duration. The programs in this manner are very comfortable to follow. No doubt younger runners may find it too easy. But for me because I am not over doing it I look forward to the next run. This is the best part of it as previously I used to overrun, too hard and too fast.
I am progressing and enjoying it !! Who would have thought that running could be enjoyable. As such I hope to progress even more.
I consider the approach based on heart rate is very good, at least for me. The fact that I am not overstretching my self means I will continue it. With age the enthusiasm to do sport diminshes.

I am new to running, just started six weeks ago. I had a problem with my knee caused by golf, not running, so I was unable to run for 2 weeks. So really, I have only been running for 4 weeks.
Anyway I have been using your stretching exercises for my last two runs and to my amazement I was pain free the day after my run for the first time.
I would like to thank you for this advice it has encouraged me even more to continue with my running program.
I really enjoy running it makes me feel alive, the way you have to push yourself testing your limits.
Right now I am doing a running and walking program. I am escalating the running portion and reducing the walking gradually week after week.
I would like to be able to run for 30 minutes by the 12th week of my program! That is very exciting, I can't believe how quickly I have fallen in love with this sport!

Ran 5k today (not a race, just the distance) and now move on to concentrating on my 10K and half marathon.

I just wanted to say thank you for such an amazing site. I decided to join up for a 10k race to raise money for cancer research, as being over weight and looking un-fit I figured it would be the one thing people would sponsor me for!
I really liked all the info, I did a 5k run today at a slow pace (took 45 mins as I cant run for more than 15 mins at a time yet) and I was pleased to see that you said taking it slow was the best, and when I finished I felt like I could have gone on.
Your site is inspirational, it has given me hope that yes I am a slow elephant at present but I will be able to run that 10k in the end and fingers crossed raise the money.
